GCS Travels to Eastern Europe

Led by Maestro Paul Mueller, a group of GCS choristers participated in a July concert tour of Bulgaria and Greece.

Performing works by Schubert, Verdi, and Monteverdi in the Bulgarian cities of Varna and Sofia, and in Thessaloniki, Greece, the group also visited scenic and historical sites in both countries.

Here are some moments from the trip.

One of the most beautiful was the Botanical Gardens in the town of Balchik, Bulgaria, on the Black Sea.

Here choristers are exploring the remains of a Roman amphitheater in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, reputed to be the oldest city in Europe.

Less ancient but still impressive was the Byzantine Wall in Thessaloniki:

Each concert ended with a rousing rendition of “Poor Man Lazarus,” which brought the audiences to their feet.
